Where it all begins
The VG farms are located in South Western Ontario. One of the most important things to us is the health of our animals. They are raised naturally on our farms:
- Our animals are fed a vegetable based diet, not animal by products.
- They are raised without the use of growth promoting hormones or hormone implants. Implants make the meat cuts larger, tougher and result in a decrease in flavour.
- Our animals are handled humanely by conscientious and caring handlers
- Proper health care and vaccinations are given to maximize the health of our animals resulting in a pure, safe and healthy product.
- Antibiotics are given only when necessary to treat a sick animal. The animal lives through the withdrawal period to ensure there are no antibiotics in the meat when it reaches your table.
Our selective breeding maximizes the traits of our cattle that are important to you. The traits that are selected include qualities that will provide a leaner, flavourful cut of meat and a smaller portion size. These characteristics will ultimately provide you with a healthier piece of meat at a more economical price using safe and efficient farming techniques.
We use technology and farming practices that keep the health of the cattle, our consumers and the environment in mind. We also keep current in our research to make sure we can give you the best product.
Sustainability:
Sustainable farming practices are important to the VG family, not only to assure healthy, nutritious meat, but to also make environmentally responsible decisions. Some sustainable practices that we ensure include the way we graze our cattle, feed our cattle and keep our cattle. We intensively graze our cattle to give the cows what they want and we leave the roots of the grass intact to maintain the pastures' integrity for future use without using up resources. These pastures are ideal for raising cattle as the clay in the soil is abundant, making the soil ideal for growing grasses to maintain cattle herds. Quality is our first priority!
A Day in the Life of Very Good Cattle:
Our cattle starts out with a diet of milk and sun-filled pasture living. As the weather turns colder and fresh grasses become unavailable, a variety of dried and fermented grasses and grains are provided as well as supplements to ensure Very Good nutrition. The feed is then transitioned to a corn-based diet with full access to dried grasses.
Another practice that makes Very Good meat is the availability of fresh air year round. Ruminants, like cattle, produce a lot of heat as they ruminate (chew their cud), so, for them having access to fresh air year round is ideal for their thick hides and excess heat production. Of course, like other warm blooded mammals, inclement weather can be detrimental. So we take care; our cattle is well tended and weather is monitored to make sure the cattle are safe and comfortable. Allowing fresh air year round has helped to reduce lung associated distress like instances of pneumonia; as prolonged exposure to indoor venting systems with all of those big bodies can cause strain on their lungs. These ruminants are originally from Northern Europe, so they are quite at home in our climate in fresh Southern Ontario air.
Grading:
It may surprise you, but we refuse to grade our beef because our facility is far more advanced than the grading system in Canada. The Canadian grading system was last remodeled in the 1970's before much of today's improved processes had been implemented. What really matters is that our customers agree that the taste and quality of our meat has not been beat.
